In Lusaka, Zambia, where hunger, malnutrition, and lack of educational opportunities are prevalent, HOPE worldwide Zambia is transforming the lives of women and families with three exciting programmes.
In the vibrant communities of Kalingalinga, Mtendere, Kanyama, and Chawama, our initiatives are designed to empower women to achieve financial independence, support children in developing healthy lifestyle habits, and provide parents with practical tools for homeschooling when formal education is out of reach.
In partnership with HOPE worldwide Zambia, we are laying a foundation for a brighter future for the families of Lusaka.
Since its launch in 2008, the women’s economic empowerment programme has transformed the lives of over 4,000 women by empowering them to achieve financial independence and meet their families’ needs for food, shelter and education.
In the women’s economic empowerment programme, women participate in various activities to boost their income, such as baking pastries to sell, sausage making, operating a restaurant, and learning how to increase their literacy and financial skills.
Beyond economic empowerment, our programme fosters a nurturing community where women can support each other as they work hard to support their families.
Since 2005, our kids’ clubs have been transforming the lives of children in Lusaka by building their confidence, nurturing brain development and teaching essential life skills through fun activities such as singing and dancing. By encouraging children to complete their education and develop positive habits and life skills, we significantly reduce the risk of drug and alcohol abuse and early-age pregnancies that are common in our programme areas.
Since the launch of the kids’ clubs, 12,000 children have graduated, marking significant milestones in their educational journeys and personal development.
With an average monthly income of just £11 to £15, three meals a day is a luxury for many parents, let alone affording school fees or nutritious meals for their children.
Since the launch of our parent support groups in 2016, we have empowered over 750 women with practical tools to homeschool their children and provide nutritious meals. This ensures their children’s education and well-being even when formal schooling is unaffordable.
Additionally, parents learn to manage stress and improve their self-esteem, which in turn helps them to have a better parenting experience.
